A glorious re-issue of the classic British war film that continues to define our notions of national identity, 70 years on.
It is World War II, and General Clive Wynne-Candy (Livesey) is portly, stuffy and outdated. But travelling back in time to the end of the Boer War, we are introduced to a younger, sharper Candy, and the life that has made him the man he is.
Through his long-term friendship with a sympathetic German officer (Walbrook), and his relationships with three key women (all played by Deborah Kerr), Pressburger and Powell deliver an insightful portrait of how love and war define us. An outstanding British masterpiece which remains remarkably beautiful.
