It took director Robert Weide over 20 years to convince the iconic writer, director, actor, comedian and musician Woody Allen to be his documentary subject. The resulting film, following eighteen months of unprecedented access to the notoriously private film legend, impressively tracks Allen’s life and career beginning with his childhood and first professional gigs as a teenager, his work in the 50s as TV scribe and standup comedian, to the writer-director averaging a film a year for more than 40 years.
Not surprisingly, most interesting within the film are the now 75 year old’s own comments: “If I didn’t make films I don’t know what else I would do, apart from playing jazz and making a nuisance of myself.”
