From Geeks to Gimps

Friday 5th August

Thursday was still preview time at the Fringe but the contrast in quality was astounding. From the superbly slick and funny sketch material of The Ginge, The Geordie and the Geek (who I would happily have paid full price for) to the truly appalling Caroline Mabey (re-christened Caroline Definitely Not) who appeared to have written her attempt at a show that morning andspent a quarter of the show referring to her notes. Perhaps this is some post-modern surreal humour that went over my head but it felt more like something nasty that I’d stepped into by accident.

I’m here this year to check out the more unusual shows to supplement the diet of single, predominantly male, standup which we all know and love but are perhaps getting a teensy weensy bit tired off. Late Night Gimp Show certainly fitted that bill – a sketch comedy show of appallingly bad, but funny, taste. Can I get that one past our Artistic Director?!
