The BAFTAs

Tuesday 14th February

The Artist

I hope no one staked money on my predictions for the BAFTAs because, as ever, I was way off the mark. Meryl got Best Actress, that was always going to happen. She came to the party, for goodness sake, you could not send her home empty handed! But Brad, you could.

The Artist won best film. Which film has left you feeling better about life this year? Its only serious rival would be martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Marty did not win for that but got the consolation of a Crackerjack pen by being inducted (or was he induced?) into the Academy, so I guess it was worth his while making the trip.

Out in the ghetto of Outstanding Achievement in British Film, Tinker Tailor got the diplomatic nod and Tyrannosaur got Outstanding Newcomer. I think British talent could feel quite hard done by. Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk about Kevin), Michael Fassbender (Shame), Olivia Colman (The Iron Lady), Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor) all deserved more than a mention in dispatches.

I know we are working in a global industry and you want to encourage the best but if we don’t advocate for our local talent for local people, who will?!!
