With the preliminary work now completed, the hard work begins for our Make It Reel students: it’s time to start the cameras rolling! The five groups disperse themselves around the campus, heading for the various filming locations they have picked.
Outside the back of the Arts Centre in the loading bay for the theatre, the group making “Sockzilla” are considering their options. They seem to have hit a bit of a snag, and have missed a step in their storyboarding. They’ve figured out a way to kill off their eponymous evil sock puppet, but the action leading up to that point is merely a vague idea at present. Cue much on-set discussions amongst the group, as they try to solve the problem. As you can see from the picture above, Sockzilla seems to be getting impatient with all of this talking!
Moving out into the woods near the student accommodation, another team are filming some exterior shots for their quest story about a pair of magic shoes. It’s been raining a fair bit, and the ground is pretty muddy, but this doesn’t stop lead actor Jamie from happily rolling around on the ground, all in the name of art! Behind the camera, Sam is directing the shot for a scene with a big explosion. On his count, party poppers are pulled to create a loud noise, and group member James launches half a bag of flour in front of the camera to represent dirt flying. Once “cut!” is called, everyone collapses in giggles as Jamie sits up, now covered head to toe in flour! He doesn’t seem to mind, and they make their way back to the Arts Centre to begin the task of editing their shots.
Tomorrow: post-production begins!
