VIDEO: Watch Devon Sproule rehearse with Coventry kids
Wednesday 03 October 2012
On Sat 6 Oct, a group of Coventry schoolchildren will take to the Warwick Arts Centre stage to perform alongside American folk/pop singer Devon Sproule.
Devon is an internationally renowned artist who lives in Austin, Texas with her label-mate and husband Paul Curreri, but calls Coventry her second home, as her record company Tin Angel is based in the Coal Vaults of Coventry’s Canal Basin.
Over the last couple of months, Devon has been hosting a series of music workshops with children from Southfields primary school in Hillfields and Barr’s Hill secondary school in Radford, to get them singing and dancing along to two of her tracks. Three workshops have already taken place ahead of this week’s gig, under the direction of Sproule and music instructor Lucy Anne Sale, who is also Sproule’s friend and fellow musician. There will be a final dress rehearsal on the day of the performance.
“I love singing with kids!” Sproule says. “The young one’s voices are so unaffected and they’re all just so darn excited,” she laughs, “and with the older ones, it’s great to see them coming around to the realization that this project is actually pretty cool – definitely not your usual run-of-the-mill piano lesson or group sing.”
The live tour sees Devon reuniting with her long-standing Midlands-based band in order to perform tracks from her album I Love You, Go Easy. A new addition to the band is virtuoso jazz guitarist and pop prince Thom Gill whose newest record will be released by Tin Angel in just a few months.
