My Journey at Warwick Arts Centre
Warwick Arts Centre Marketing Assistant, Joe Murphy, talks through his journey and experience at the organisation.
I first joined Warwick Arts Centre, as an apprentice back in 2019. I had a passion to work within the arts, and it felt like the perfect first step. This experience was not only a start of something new for me but also the Arts Centre. I was one of the first enrolled apprentices.
Within the first couple of weeks of my apprenticeship I knew this was the place for me. I had the opportunity to meet every department and felt so welcomed and included. Joining a company as an apprentice can feel quite daunting, as you have to work, study and try to fit in within an environment you haven’t experienced before. Yet, the whole team made this experience incredibly rewarding.
I joined as a Business Administration Apprentice, which doesn’t scratch the surface of what I was able get involved with. A tailored program allowed me to spend a month within each department and work on different projects with each of them. This gave me a chance to work on a wide variety of tasks and roles. It also allowed me to see how the company runs holistically, the importance of every department pulling in the same direction and how that happens.
Unfortunately, Covid cut this experience short. I did still gain my qualification but the uncertainty within the arts during this difficult time meant I entered the furlough scheme. However, I was lucky enough to now know exactly what I wanted to do with my career. I found my passion of marketing within the arts, and this would be my goal moving forward.
I went onto complete another apprentice this time in Digital Marketing. I had an eye on returning to the arts world once I completed this. After spending 15 months at another theatre, I saw that Warwick Arts Centre were advertising for a Marketing Assistant, exactly what I had trained for.
I knew this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, to return to the company that first gave me a chance and put me on the career path I dreamed of. 3 years after completing my apprenticeship here at Warwick Arts Centre, I am proud to say I was successful and have recently started as a full-time member of staff!
Since starting at the Arts Centre in my current role I have been able to get involved in our Email Marketing, Social Media, Research and Reporting plus much more!
I have a keen interest in cinema so have loved being to get involved with this side of the business as much as I can.
As my confidence and skills continue to develop I look forward to continuing my journey at Warwick Arts Centre!
