When Layla, a struggling Arab drag queen, falls in love for the first time, they lose and find themselves in a transformative relationship that tests who they really are.

Layla's confident façade hides their desperate desire for love. When their performance at a belittling corporate Pride event turns into a transgressive takedown, they are surprised to catch the eye of marketing executive Max, whose attentions sweep Layla off their feet. The two start an intoxicating romance, but as Layla starts to alter who they are in order to keep Max’s interest, they both have to face uncomfortable truths.

Layla will be preceded by a short film:

Make Me A King

Dir. Sofia Olins

Ari performs as a Jewish Drag King, much to the confusion of their family. Idolising real-life hero, Pepi Littman, who carved out a space for Drag Kings over 100 years ago, they use this history to open up a space for acceptance in the present.

UK (2021) / 16’

This special screening will be followed by a Q&A with Layla writer/director Amrou Al-Kadhi in discussion with WAC associate artist Adam Carver (aka Fatt Butcher).

We're pleased to present these films as part of our East to West season: LGBTQUIA+ history through cinema – from the former Eastern Bloc and the UK, spanning the recent past to the modern day.
