Mati Diop’s (Atlantics) Golden Bear-winning Dahomey explores thinking around cultural appropriation and restitution.

November 2021: 26 royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey are due to be returned from Paris to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. Using multiple perspectives – including strange and haunting voices emanating from the treasures themselves – Diop questions how these artefacts should be received in a country that has reinvented itself in their absence. Is true restitution possible – or even desirable?
