Workshop Wednesdays are Warwick Arts Centre's series of free workshops, open to everyone 1.30-4pm every Wednesday during term time.

We partner each week with artists and student societies to bring you free drop in workshops. 

No need to book, all materials provided, free and open to all.

Wednesday 02/10/2024  - Slow Stitch Pocket Quilting:         

Artist: Julia O’Connell   

Take some time out and join award winning textile artist, Julia O’Connell in this mini pocket quilt slow stitch session. 

Slow stitching is the practice of simple rhythmic hand stitching using needle and thread to create textile pieces; it is a calming, mindful activity, helping us to unwind, and be present; it allows the busy mind to rest through the act of doing and can aid good mental health and self-care. 

Julia has a commitment to using found or gifted fabrics and sewing materials and works sustainably with an emphasis on producing textile art pieces with little or zero waste.

Artist: Ania Bas

Want to change the world? You are invited to create bespoke placards that call for the change you want to see. Big and small campaigns welcome! Do you want to protect the environment? Talk about politics, childcare, gender? Or maybe you want to introduce a universal right to daytime naps? Join Ania Bas, artist, writer and accomplished sign maker to design and paint your placard that could help shape the future!

Artist: Naoibh McNamee - Prop Making 1 - Global Light Procession:        

Are you ready to light up the night and celebrate the vibrant cultures that make our campus a global community?

This season, Workshop Wednesday are teaming up with Warwick Presents and the Student’s Union to bring you a mix of workshops that celebrate our global community with ‘One World Warwick’! 

In this first prop making workshop, you can join artist, Naoibh McNamee to make paper lanterns and costumes in advance of the procession on November 13th. 

This is your chance to create stunning illuminated props to use in a collaborative procession that celebrates diversity, fosters community spirit, and inspires everyone to embrace the beauty of our multicultural world. 

Not taking part in the procession? You are warmly welcome to join in and flex your artistic muscles to create something to take home!

Wednesday 23/10/2024 - Prop Making 2 - Global Light Procession:

In this second prop making workshop, you can join artist, Naoibh McNamee to make paper lanterns and costumes in advance of the Global Light Procession on November 13th. 

This is your chance to create stunning illuminated props to use in a collaborative procession that celebrates diversity, fosters community spirit, and inspires everyone to embrace the beauty of our multicultural world. 

This is a collaboration with Warwick Presents and the Student’s Union to celebrate ‘One World Warwick’. 

Not planning to take part in the procession? You are warmly welcome to come and work with Naoibh to create something to take home. 

Wednesday 30/10/2024 - Sparkle – Paint a Light:           

Artist: Taiba Akhtar      

Inspired by Diwali and Rangoli, come and make your own origami style candle and learn how to monoprint onto it! 

This will be a lively and colourful celebration with vivid yellows, reds and greens. Join artist, Taiba Akhtar as she demonstrates how to get to grips with perspex, palette knives, brushes, paint, ink and rollers to create beautiful floral motifs that will bring light and joy to any Diwali celebration.

It’s time to celebrate our global community with ‘One World Warwick’! In this fourth and final prop making workshop, you can join artist, Naoibh McNamee to finish off your props and costumes before taking part in the Global Light Procession at 5pmthat will weave its way through central campus accompanied by student musicians. Let’s light up the night and celebrate the vibrant cultures that make our campus a global community! 

Not planning to take part in the procession? Feel free to drop in to create something to take home that celebrates you!

Wednesday 27/11/2024 - Play with Clay:        

Artist: Emily Hett

Get ready to mould and shape your imagination with this air-drying clay workshop. Explore different hand building techniques, including coil building, and learn how to create different patterns and textures using found materials. 

Emily will guide you every step of the way with tips on how best to make useful objects like bowls, trinket dishes, pen holders or just let your imagination go wild and create your own sculptural form! 

Wednesday 04/12/2024 - Stitched Together:           

Artist: Rumbi Savanhu 

Let’s get together and stitch together! Join artist Rumbi Savanhu as she invites you to play with applique, embrace embroidery and get to grips with quilting to piece together a fun, bright and playful piece of art. 

You can also choose to use your artwork to customise bags or clothes with tips and advice from Rumbi. This the perfect workshop to learn new stitching skills in time to create beautiful festive decorations and gifts for loved ones!
