The Queen of Spades is a tale of tragedy, betrayal and love.
Tchaikovsky’s opera is based on the infamous short story of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, although with some dramatic changes.
The protagonist Hilda is a struggling soldier, who spends most of her spare time watching others playing cards at the gambling house. She has recently fallen in love with Lisa, the granddaughter of the famous Countess, who holds the winning secret of the cards. Turning her back on her pursuit of love, Hilda fights to find the secret of the cards but loses herself along the way.
